Epic Trip – Weeks 7 & 8

Day 43 – Monterey Bay Aquarium & Carmel-By-The-Sea

Monterey is known for many things, but one of the major attractions here is the Monterey Bay Aquarium, & the major attraction at the aquarium for us was the otters.  We could have spent hours sitting there watching them, but rather headed off around 17 Mile Drive and through to Carmel-By-The-Sea.  Carmel’s main claim is that Clint Eastwood was once the Mayor, and has always had significant influence in the town.

Tomorrow we head for San Francisco.

Day 44 – San Francisco

Took our time packing up and leaving Monterey this morning, and drove up the coast to San Francisco.  Our first stop was Twin Peaks.  Last time I was in San Francisco  the marine layer was that thick that when I went up Twin Peaks I could not see a thing!  Fortunately  the weather played nice today and there was a fantastic view before us.  After a bite to eat we then ventured down Lombard Street (with every other tourist in town…..) and then out to the Marin Headlands for the late afternoon sun on the Golden Gate Bridge.  Traffic was pretty good, so from Marin we headed to Pier 39 to see the sea lions and see what was available for dinner.  Bubba Gumps drew that short straw; very nice!  Will have to go back when we come across them again.  We have an early start tomorrow as we are off to Alcatraz!

Day 51 – Portland, Oregon

After arriving into Portland yesterday, this morning we headed straight out to the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum at McMinnville – home of the “Spruce Goose“. After that we ventured up Portland’s Aerial Tram, and then past USS Blueback (SS-581).
