The Harlem Globetrotters

I have a few rituals that those close to me know about;

If I am in Wellington, then I visit Te Papa Museum to sit and have a coffee and cheese scone while dribbling over the Britten V1000, and if the Harlem Globetrotters are in town, then I’m going to be there!

This week they were on the Gold Coast, and all other plans were put on hold to attend – front row tickets no less, which put us right in the firing line when the cups and bottles of water were thrown around.

My first Globetrotters game was in Auckland back in the early 90’s. The gags haven’t changed much over the years, but they are always delivered in the best, most entertaining way, and as cliché as it sounds, it’s good clean family entertainment.

What can’t be choreographed is the skill and talent of the players. They are phenomenal athletes whose abilities would not be out of place in any professional basketball league on the planet.

Fortunately for us, the spectators, they have chosen to be entertainers as well.

For a couple of hours we were dazzled and entertained, and left with a face that’s sore from smiling and laughing.
